Lucky Man: Memoir of a Prostate Cancer Survivor
On the day I was told I had prostate cancer, the diagnosing physician gave me a book on the topic – a clinical 200-pager written for the layman by the likes of Dr. A. Ness Fingerpoken. The only man that reads that book already has prostate cancer. Books of this nature are helpful, but they are too little, too late.
So I wrote a graphic novel which is the perfect literary format for men; lots of pictures, few words, villains, heroes, deep thinking not required, and can be read in about 15 minutes – equivalent to the time it takes for a man to sit on the toilet where we do our best learning.
Lucky Man: Memoir of a Prostate Cancer Survivor – my fifth book – will be distributed for free at healthcare clinics and businesses that provide services to men 40 years of age or older.

FACTS ABOUT THE KILLER THAT SHOULDN’T BE
- Prostate cancer – a silent killer with symptoms that are easily ignored – is the number 2 cancer killer of men and number 3 overall.
- Early detection is the only true defense. If found early and treated before it has spread, a man’s chance of being alive in five years is nearly 100%, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). This is called localized prostate cancer.
- If prostate cancer colonizes new locations in the body (metastatic prostate cancer), two out of three will be dead in five years. There is no cure for metastatic prostate cancer.
- Compared with white men, African American men are more likely to develop prostate cancer and are twice as likely to die from the disease, according to the American Cancer Institute.
- The Caribbean Public Health Agency and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that the rates of death from cervical, breast, prostate, and colon cancer are 2 – 9 times higher in the Caribbean than in the United States. The study also reported that prostate cancer accounted for 18% – 47% of cancer deaths.
These facts are alarming considering that prostate cancer can be prevented through lifestyle changes and early detection and treatment.
THE BACKSTORY
Within the universe of disease awareness, prostate cancer is a black hole. Despite being the number two cancer killer of men and the number three killer overall, prostate cancer receives little attention. Most men don’t know the function of the prostate but know its location, and we run and hide like frightened little boys.
I emerged from my cancer journey with a new understanding of men’s attitudes about their health. We men eagerly pursue performance improvements but avoid the life-or-death preventive actions that address prostate and colon health. As a result, men die 6 to 7 years earlier than women, and way too many perish unnecessarily from prostate cancer.
Shortly after my treatment concluded at Texas Oncology, I fully accepted the truth about my former self and men in general. The reason why prostate cancer is the #2 cancer killer of men is not that it is so deadly, at least not in its early stages. The real power behind the killer in this story is the male ego. It was this epiphany that sparked this initiative.

The Goals
Educate
As smart as we men (think we) are, there are certain topics that we run from as fast as possible, especially those involving our back door. The best defense against this silent killer is early detection. Men need to understand the importance of early screening – what is required and at what age to start.
Raise Public Awareness
Society needs to know more about prostate cancer. You may not know this, but men are stubborn. In order to create a much needed “Mind Shift” in men regarding engagement in preventive health, men need to feel the heat from loved ones – children, parents, spouses, partners, friends, etc.
Prepare for the Future
Stealing from cancer’s playbook (but in a good way), we have a plan to expand. This event is the first step. Next year the events will spread throughout the DFW metroplex, then Texas, and finally the whole damn nation. A portion of the proceeds will be set aside to support the expansion.
Give
Cancer is a gut punch to families emotionally and financially. After all other financial obligations have been paid, the majority of dollars will be given to cancer foundations, especially those that focus on making life easier for individuals and their loved ones going through the cancer experience now.
Fun for All
Ah fun, the purpose of life. This highly charged, heavily publicized family fun event is definitely going to be fun, and few establishments can deliver like Main Event. “It’s game on cancer, let’s ball.”
